Richard Croteau was born and raised in a small French village in Quebec, both dancing and figure skating throughout his youth. After graduating from Sherbrooke University with his BA in Accounting, he was recruited by the Ice Capades for a world tour performing ice shows for the next two years.
Richard settled in California after getting a taste of its beautiful weather - a drastic change from his icy origins farther north. He then traded in his ice skates for a pair of ballroom shoes, and traded his former world of ice for warmer dance floors.
He went on to compete professionally all over the United States in the American Smooth and Theatre Arts categories for many years.
During that time he won many competitions, including making the finals of the United States national championship and the Ohio Star Ball, earning the title of US Champion in the Theatre Arts division. He then went on to represent the United States in Theatre Arts in Blackpool, England, the largest and most prestigious competition in the world. At the same time he continued competing in ProAm with his many students, winning many first place awards with them while also winning Top Teacher honors several times on the dance circuit. After retiring from professional competition, Richard continued to dedicate himself to advancing his students’ skill and enjoyment of dance, as he does to this day. They often perform in national dance competitions, show cases, dance parties, their own weddings, and he continues to accompany them on cruises, dancing their way around the world.
Although Richard specializes in American Smooth and Theatre Arts categories, what he really teaches his students is the joy of dancing with his unique flair and style tailored to fit his students’ personalities.
